a snowless winter so far

this time last year, we had about 20 inches on the ground and were bracing for what the weather man promised would be a big one. this year, no snow ... this is my 41st winter in vermont, and while i remember others with not much snow, or with snow on the ground for only part of the winter, i never remember getting to the middle of february without having my driveway plowed once. its just too weird ... they say the skiings good and from a distance, it does look like the snowmaking works. but in the photo below, that should all be white. when i was at stratton two weeks ago, except for the trails, there was no snow in the woods ... too weird.
the view of stratton from big bromley, about 10 miles or so to the south.
above is my backyard last sunday, and it still looks the same today. flakeless ...
the mosses are fascinating though ...
theres a little ice on the pond that comes and goes, but the strange thing is that most winters it
is frozen from mid december to late march and this year the duckweed is still green ... not a flake in front of the shop door ...
and not a snowdrift in the parking lot. it made me think about the new metalshop that is in the wish/plan/finance/early permit/estimate phase ... might happen; might not .. well see ...
early design phase ...
the dirt road was frozen and my convertible is in my neighbors heated garage while he is in florida, and it was sooo sunny, i went for a ride ... top up, though the sun was tempting.
one more moss and frost picture ... maybe more tomorrow ...

Finished the Cockatoo Chair

We finished the chair prototype today and after work I fired up my new camera. Ive been impressed by technology before, but this was/is a surprise ... As a first test after charging the battery for half an hour, I went to the shop, walked our chair prototype out to the abandoned flower garden, and took a couple of snapshots. I came home and put them on the computer and was blown away ... The chair came out great and were very proud of it, but whoooooa ... the photos are amazing. These have been compressed for the web .... the full size versions knocked my socks off right out of the camera ....and I havent even read the manual yet ... Click to enlarge ...

On the way home I stopped in the driveway to photograph Kits tree peony thats blooming... Ive taken photos of it before, like every year probably, but nothing like this ... Top one is the whole image compressed ... Bottom is a part of the top image ....

Click these to check them out ...

I saw the future today

White Oak ~ Quercus alba

"A man who plants a tree, is a man with foresight"
Someone once said that to me and Ive always remembered it. This is a shot of a little White Oak I planted last year. Ive already started planning what Im going to build with it too. Some nice quarter sawn stock for an Arts and Crafts style Rocking Chair. Why not right? Ill be about 150 years old when its time to start milling!

and my paint project was

Hi! Good news! We made it to the final round of Creating with the Stars!! Final voting starts on Monday, so make sure to come back then for more info!!

We ended up photographing our new secretary in the garage since it was SO heavy! It doesnt look too bad, but I could barely pick up my side. We have no where to put it, so well be selling it!

We started with a piece from Goodwill, they were remodeling the back end of the building so we got it for 50% off, which ended up at $30. Im thinking the drop panel was originally intended to be a dry bar, Goodwill even had it "staged" with an ice bucket and martini glasses ...

We decided to turn it into a secretary desk and I love the new layout! We also added little feet to help it look not as bottom heavy and swapped the hardware for something smaller.

We designed the stencils in the computer and cut them out on the silhouette. The big one is 9 - 12x12 sheets that were taped together!

and a few behind the scenes shots ...

This stencil was pretty exhausting since it was so big, I had to hold down the stencil as I went since it didnt want to stay flat on the wall. We did photograph it in the garage, but there is concrete there! I picked up some cheap (about $1 a ft) laminate from Home Depot. It looked nice for the price, I wonder if it would hold up well? Finally, when styling, Im a big place it and step back to see what it looks like, David was nice enough to move things around for me :)

I found these brass pieces at a local antique store, only a few dollars each!

Vase and pencil holder are votive containers from Target.

I was so excited to see ranunculus, my second favorite flower (favorite peonies)

See how thick that door is!? The doors alone were super heavy!

I really love it :) I hope you do too!! Im off to work on my final project!! :) Wish me luck!
