Gustav Stickley REWRITE of 02 FEB posting

Gustav Stickley was a beginning of the 20th century furniture maker, architect, and spokesperson for the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1901 he founded The Craftsman, a periodical based on the philosophy of the English Arts and Crafts movement. Later the magazine took on a definite American perspective. In 1903 he started the Craftsman Home Builders Club (more about this in my next entry) to spread his ideas about architecture.

I like Stickley’s simplicity of design and excellent sense of proportion, which can be seen in his tall clock design (c. 1902-3) – see clock illustration. The clock embodies the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement – simple straight lines and rectangular shape. The clock is currently in the collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art – a great place to visit if you are ever in New York.

All of his furniture was handmade and designed to be simple and useful. He made his furniture from native American oak with exposed joinery, such as through tenons - see table illustration. Upholstery, if applied, was done with natural materials like canvas and leather. Varnish could be used to finish the wood, but it was never painted.

In spite of his talent, in 1915 he declared bankruptcy. Originally from New York, I occasionally encountered some of his work in my day-to-day travels but never realized its value – at least monetarily. For example, in 1988, Barbara Streisand reportedly paid $363,000 for a Stickley sideboard. Boy did I miss some golden opportunities.

Charles and Ray Eames

After checking out some of their chairs, I started reading about the husband and wife designer team, Charles and Ray Eames. I had seen chairs of theirs without knowing who designed them. Although the couple were active from the 30s through the 80s, the easiest way I can think of describing their chairs is retro or a 1960s mod design. Honestly, when I see chairs like theirs, the first things that come to mind are an apartment scene from the movie "A Clockwork Orange" and the furniture store Ikea. The movie was filmed in 1971 and was set in a late 1960s version of a futuristic London. This explains why I associated Eames mod chairs with a movie they probably werent even filmed in. Also, I was so sure I had seen their chairs at Ikea, that I googled it. Turns out theres a few articles about getting Eames knockoffs at Ikea. This one for instance: Knock It Off.

The influence of science and new technology were evident in their exhibition Mathematica: A World of Numbers...and Beyond at the California Museum of Science and Industry, their movie Powers of Ten, described on IMDB(Internet Movie Database) as a “scientific film essay”, their extensive work with IBM, and by the use of new building methods and materials in furniture. Rays study of abstract art and the couples interest in science also come across in the fascinating shapes of some of their chairs (especially those from the 50s and 60s). The chairs are very simple but have biomorphic shapes. Modern for their time, the chairs utilize molded plywood and plastics.

The Eames believed they could improve the lives of people by making functional furniture/art that did not sacrifice expression and design. They even worked with the government to spread their art to the masses. Ultimately, the main attraction for me is this integration of function and design.

Because of all this research now I want these with a Ray Eames design pattern. :)

btw-please let me know if anything is inaccurate or doesnt make sense. thanks

New Mere Mortals stuff

A couple things. First, please note that I have finally added a Videos tab at the top of this site to make it easier to find all of my videos. I think this is a lot easier than trying to navigate YouTubes channel pages.

Secondly, a bit of marketing. I want to thank all of you who have splurged and bought Mere Mortals stuff from the gift shop. Everything there makes a great gift for loved ones and as well as not-so-loved ones.

New! Just in time for Christmas. Or the World Series.

The all-new, ultra stylish Mere Mortals baseball jersey You will be the envy of the team. Or better yet, buy nine and start your own team! They are only $19.99. Thats under twenty bucks!

But wait, theres more! Ive added this sweet Mere Mortals magnet to complement the tee. Its only $3.99 and would make a perfect adornment to that beer fridge in your shop.

Finally, my son came up with this idea and gets all the profits. (Hes trying to save up to buy a new guitar.) I kind of like the sentiment. It sums up Mere Mortals perfectly: it has something to say, and yet is ultimately meaningless. Its yours to confuse and perplex people for the low price of $16.99.
Its the Wait, what? shirt!

For this and more Mere Mortals junk you probably really dont need, visit the Mere Mortals Gift Shop today!

Thanks for your patience with this sales pitch. Back to woodworking tomorrow!

Freshening for Guests

This past week weve had company and now today my husbands cousin is coming to stay for the night.  As I made up the bed this morning with freshly laundered sheets that smelled faintly like lavender I couldnt help but grab the camera.   This room just makes me happy.  When company comes, we usually move Rosetta out of her bedroom and into the playroom so guests can sleep on the queen sized bed.

This lamp has always been a very favorite of mine.  I bought it years ago before I even had a home of my own!  It seems like it was just meant for this room, where its soft and romantic.

After I made these paper flowers for Jillians birthday, I didnt have the heart to throw them out... instead I stuck them on the bedside table.  I guess theyll work when fresh flowers arent found.  (smile)

I love the contrast of the soft colors and warm wood.  I still have a couple things Id like to do in this room, but I like the direction its heading.

This bedroom sits off our front porch, which I gave a thorough scrubbing yesterday.  Outside the window you can see a couple of my antique clay pots, which I just used for planting some mint and cilantro in.

And speaking of the windows, I think I finally found the perfect fabric for making curtains with.  The windows are bare in her room as Ive been waiting for the right fabric... what do you think?

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!  On Sunday we are leaving for a mini vacation with my husbands family... it will be nice to get away for a couple days!

Family Room Den Ideas

Hey there!  Hope everyone is having a great week!  I finally finished up the den and I am so tickled with it.  I decorated the room for my hubby because it is where he likes to relax with our boys and so I thought it would be fun to fill the room with some of the things he loves most.  I started the redo by building this reclaimed wood shelving unit.  He had asked for a unique shelf to display some of his collections.  Then when he came home with this colorful minnow basket, I decided to use it for inspiration for the rest of the room.  Heres what I came up with.
Because of the cheerful bright colors on the minnow bucket, I chose red, white and black for the color scheme of the room.  I wanted the space to have a nautical/lake house/coastal vibe to it.  So, big bold stripes were perfect.  I ordered the fabrics for the pillows at fabric.com.  The rug I already had and purchased from Lowes several years ago.  The roman shades I made from old cheap mini blinds and drop cloth that I painted grain sack stripes on in barn red.  Here is a fantastic tutorial on how to make them.
This coffee table is a storage chest that my dad built for me many years ago and its super heavy.  So when hubby came home with another set of gorgeous vintage castors, I thought it would be pretty cool to attach them to the chest to make it more mobile.  Plus, I love the charm it adds to a very special piece.
Our den is at the base of the stairway, which is getting ready to receive a major overhaul, as well.  Cant wait for that one!
I painted the Boat Dock and Bait Shop sign on old barn wood and attached a fill it strip to the back.  The oar came from an old barn but I added the number with grey craft paint, and gave it a bit of distressing.

I was super excited about this project.  Im sure some of you have seen this burlap board from Pottery Barn.
via
Well, I thought it would be kinda cool to make so I bought a tri-fold foam board, covered it in canvas, then covered it in burlap and stapled everything to the back of the foam board.  Then I built a frame with ripped pieces of barn wood because that is what I had, but you could also use 1 x 2s. Before I completely attached everything, I spray painted two small wood dowel rods with oil rubbed bronze spray paint, also because that is what I had on hand, drilled corresponding holes on each side of the frame and inserted the rods.  Then I completed the frame and framed the rest of the board.

To keep the board inside the frame, I used heavy duty staples and a staple gun. Voila!  Because I had everything to make this except the foam board and dowel rods, this project only cost me 10 bucks!
Hes totally happy with it and its perfect for some of the small paper items that my husband collects, like old drive in movie calenders from 1962, vintage maps and post cards, old metal movie reels, and anything else he or the boys wants to stick up there.  Does anyone else think that metal movie reel looks like a steering wheel on a boat??  I also hung the vintage maps we found when we went out thrifting one weekend.
This TV console is an old record player cabinet that hubby found on a picking adventure.  The record player didnt work so we pulled it out and decided to use it for our TV console and game system for the kiddos.  I love it, its solid wood and didnt need anything done to it at all.  I even liked the hardware.
Picked this basket up at a yard sale and love it!  Love the cool texture it adds to the room.
Heres hubbys shelf.  He filled it with his collection of minnow buckets (I love that chippy green one, thinking about sticking some fresh flowers in it, if hell let me, lol), a vintage fishing reel, an old pump gauge from a fire truck (my hubby is a fireman) and hes got several other things going on it when he makes up his mind. :)
Hes pretty excited about the possibilities.  I love that.  :)
The white chair is my favorite part.  It used to be an everyday suede arm chair that was starting to show its wear, so, thanks to a good friend, I got an Ektorp chair cover for only 29 bucks at Ikea.  I was determined to make it fit, and I did, by golly. It fit perfectly and I was so excited!  Like the kind of excited you get when youre a kid waiting for Christmas morning. :)  I couldnt sleep!!  For only $29, its like we got a completely new chair!  And Ive heard that you just throw them in the wash and bleach them when they get dirty.
Were both super happy about the room and he finally has a place to display the things he loves.  Oh, I switched couches with the living room and den simply because this couch is so much more comfortable and he likes it better.  So the newly upholstered couch is in the living room where decorating changes for fall will start soon.  Im ready, so tired of this intense heat, even though summer is our favorite time of the year.  Anyone else ready for fall?
Have a great day friends!
